Plant Medicine Details:

The Burdock and Calendula in this remedy were organically grown at Earth Temple Gardens on Ktunaxa (Kootenay) territory, with loving intention, care, and respect for the land and people. In purchasing this remedy for your health, you are also supporting local organic farmers who feed and nourish not only us, but the land as well.

The Wild Cleavers and Nettle in this remedy were harvested locally on Salt Spring Island, and the Wormwood was organically grown locally.

Burdock is a blood and liver purifier that eliminates toxins from the blood very rapidly. It helps to clear the blood of harmful acids due to calcification deposits. Burdock affects the pituitary gland helping to release protein in proper amounts, thereby maintaining hormonal balance. Burdock is mineral-rich and can help balance the body’s systems as well as hormones. This medicine can also be used as a remedy for prolapsed or displaced uterus (American Botanical Council, 2011).

Calendula is a soothing antispasmodic nervine that relieves menstrual cramps and gently influences the menstrual flow. It is an alterative that cleanses the bloodstream. This medicine increases the life force in the pelvic region and is specific for dysmenorrhea (pain associated with menstruation). Calendula works to soothe and heal irritated and dry vaginal walls, while treating vaginal warts, fibroids, and leucorrhea (white or yellow discharge of mucous from the vagina) (Wood, 2008).

Cleavers is primarily used for lymphatic congestion, improving the lymphatic system’s ability to flush out toxins, decrease congestion, and reduce swelling. This remedy also acts on the breasts, and nervous system. The medicine works to heal fibrocystic breasts and swelling of the breasts during the female cycle. This medicine will calm an oversensitive nervous system, specifically before and during menses (Wood, 2008).

Nettle is nutrient-rich and it is one of the plants highest in protein and helps all protein pathways in the body – digestion, immune response, liver metabolism, skin reactions, and kidney elimination. This plant is also high in vitamins and minerals, making it an essential component of this blend for the treatment of excessive menstruation which may be linked to anemia from blood loss, as well as premature cessation of the menses. Nettle will restore nutrients to the body while the body is cleansing through the blood.

Wormwood stimulates digestion and relieves liver stagnation. For missed menstrual periods when the uterus is weak and lacks tone, Wormwood acts as a uterine stimulant to bring on bleeding and promotes uterine circulation, while relieving menstrual cramps (American Botanical Council, 2011). Long considered a tonic for the brain and mind, Wormwood stimulates and restores energy to the nervous system to relieve nervous exhaustion from long-term stress or unhealed trauma leading to fatigue, anxiety, headache, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, depression, and despair. Wormwood will also encourage stomach acid secretion, improve appetite, and relieve indigestion, stomach inflammation, nausea, and heartburn (Kloos, 2017).

For women who experience pain and discomfort during their moon cycle, it is important to find out why. Is there a lack of emotional and physical nourishment within the self or the environment? Do you feel emotionally safe and supported? Are you getting enough exercise such as yoga and stretching to encourage blood flow through the pelvis? Movement throughout the entire cycle can ensure that the circulation, blood, and energy are flowing optimally throughout the body. Proper hydration is also key when the body is cleansing and releasing fluid. Dense nutritional whole foods and proteins are also necessary to support the body while bleeding.

During the moontime, as well as during childbirth, a woman is said to be closest to Creator. It is essential that women are fully supported during this sacred time of the month; that they are being cared for and nourished, while taking a step back from their everyday routines to go into their inner red tent and be with themselves and Creator. Only then can she come back to her family and community with the wisdom gained during her personal moon ceremony. It can also be helpful for women to attune to the cycles of the moon and connect with Grandmother Moon on a deeper level by bathing in her light and allowing the lunar energy to share her wisdom with them.
